Local historian and Lincoln researcher Chris Harris will present an updated talk on the four Lincoln brothers who came to Clay County from Fayette County, Kentucky 200 years ago; Abraham, George B, John T. and David. From these four brothers, thirty-three children carried on their lineage and farmed just over a combined 1,550 acres in and around Liberty, Missouri. Who was this family? How did this family impact Clay County? Are they related to President Abraham Lincoln? Come to our May Third-Thursday program and learn more about this pioneering family of Clay County.
The April 20, 2023
Presented by Jana Jessee Becker. This program’s topic covers the “World War II Liberty POW camp” as well as camps located in other parts of Missouri. In existence from 1942 to 1945, the Liberty Camp housed Italian and German prisoners of war, including soldiers from German Field Marshall Erwin Rommel’s elite Duetsches Afrika Korps. Daily life, work assignments, meals, clothing, housing, and personal stories are just some of the topics that will be covered.
The March 16, 2022
“Clay County Family Connections, 1820s-1850s” and is presented by Chery Carr Holtman, the museum’s curator. It will explore the similarities between the presenter’s 2nd great-grandparents and includes individuals from the Neal, Gittings, Robertson, Pence, Routt and Adkins families. The pre-Civil War era was one of peace and prosperity in Liberty and these families emigrated from the east to share in the new state and county. While having various backgrounds they share common experiences, as well as their own unique ones.
